Am travelling in a few days to Haiti followed by the Dominican Republic. I have often travelled on my own and it is usually ok but must say all that I hear about Haiti, despite reading Bradt's guide, does make me Wonder if it's ok.
For instance, travelling from PAP to Hinche on public transport- is that alright? Dress modestly, be prepared for catcalls foreigners get this all the time - you will be called 'blan' meaning 'white' but it can be called at any foreigner , don't travel past dark, keep your things with you and well-held.
Haiti is about as safe as any country But if you are light-skinned you will stick out and be subjected to begging and some catcalls - there is a very long history of Westerners mistreating the people of this country and although it is not common knowledge outside of Haiti, it is well known in Haiti.
Otherwise you really shouldn't have too many problems. Many solo women have traveled through and stayed in Haiti. If you'd care to, if you remember and have the inclination, please let me know transportation options you discover.
I will cross the border from the D. I'm confident I'll find the appropriate bus, tap taps, etc. IF not or in any event, have a grand time. Travelling alone is not a problem, but you should follow your common sense by doing this. I do not know why you want to travel to Hinche, probably you have friends there, otherwise this is one of the less interesting places to visit in the country.
