A high-ranking police officer in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero was gunned down Thursday, authorities told EFE, adding that three of the assailants were subsequently killed in a battle with cops.
David Urquizo, state police commander for the central zone of Guerrero, was attacked around 9 a. Urquizo, who was traveling without an escort, tried to defend himself but stood no chance against more than a dozen assailants armed with assault rifles. Police set out immediately in search of the assailants and caught up with them about an hour later at a business establishment on the north side of Chilpancingo.
The gunmen started shooting when the police arrived and three suspects were killed in the ensuing firefight, a source in the state Attorney General's Office told EFE. Urquizo, who emerged unscathed after an attack last month, was dismissed from the state police several years ago after human rights activists blamed him for the death of two protesters during a demonstration in December But late last year, after Angel Aguirre resigned as Guerrero's governor amid a public uproar over the kidnapping of 43 students, the new administration reinstated Urquizo and gave him command of an elite unit.
The attackers fired shots, according to the official report. Three suspects were wounded and police took 11 others into custody. Peace is being fired upon from many angles.
